Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT WARMWOOL
WarmWool is a Netherlands-based online retailer dedicated exclusively to Texeler, a premium wool bedding brand crafted on the Dutch island of Texel. We don't manufacture anything ourselves — we focus entirely on curating, selling, and supporting a single brand we've known and trusted for decades.
The business has roots on Texel and has worked closely with Texeler for over ten years. That long relationship is why we know these products inside out: which duvet suits which sleeper, how the production works, and how the range fits together across seasons and sleeping needs.
For the full story behind why we chose to build our business around just one brand, read our mission.
Yes. WarmWool has been an authorized Texeler retailer for over ten years, and we're the only online store dedicated exclusively to Texeler products.
Texeler doesn't sell directly to consumers online — they distribute through authorized physical retailers and a small number of online partners like us. Every product on our site is sourced directly from Texeler, with the same warranty, certifications, and quality guarantees as any other authorized sales channel.
If you'd like to verify our status, feel free to contact Texeler directly — they'll confirm the partnership.
The short version: Texeler doesn't sell directly to customers online.
Texeler distributes through authorized retailers rather than running their own consumer webshop. Most of their partners are large multi-brand bedding stores where Texeler is just one name on the shelf among many. WarmWool is different: we're the only online retailer in Europe that sells exclusively Texeler — no other bedding brands, no distractions.
A few things that set us apart from other Texeler stockists:
- International shipping. Most Texeler retailers only ship within the Benelux. We ship across the EU and to select countries worldwide, so customers in Italy, Sweden, the UK, or further afield can actually receive these products.
- English and German support. Our website and customer service are available in English and German, with more languages planned. Most Texeler retailers operate only in Dutch.
- Exclusive focus. Because we only sell Texeler, we know the product range, the production process, and the quirks of every item in depth. You're not talking to someone splitting their attention across fifteen brands.
- Bundles and sales. We offer combined-product bundles and periodic discounts that aren't available through every Texeler channel.
No. WarmWool sells Texeler bedding exclusively, and we don't plan to change that.
Specializing in one brand we genuinely trust is better, in our view, than stocking a wide range of products we can't vouch for personally. Texeler has been part of our lives for decades, and our entire business is built around that single commitment — if we started carrying other brands, that focus would be lost.
ABOUT TEXELER & TEXELER WOOL
Texeler wool comes from sheep raised on one of the Netherlands' windiest islands, and that environment is exactly what gives the wool its bedding-grade qualities.
Climate-shaped fiber. Texeler's own description puts it well: salty sea air, wind, and sun make the Texel sheep's fleece voluminous, curly, soft, resilient, and optimally insulating. These aren't sheep raised on sheltered inland farms — they graze on exposed coastal pastures, and the fleece reflects that.
Extra lanolin. Texel's harsh coastal conditions cause these sheep to produce more lanolin — the natural oil that keeps wool fibers flexible, resilient, naturally antibacterial, and self-cleaning. This is one of the main reasons Texeler bedding stays fresh without frequent washing and maintains its structure over decades of use.
Natural temperature regulation. The same properties that keep the sheep comfortable in extreme winter cold and summer heat transfer directly to your bedding. Wool actively regulates temperature by absorbing and releasing moisture — warm in winter, breathable in summer.
A proprietary interweaving process. After de-dusting and carding, Texeler uses a unique interweaving technique developed and refined at their Oudeschild factory. This is what gives Texeler wool its distinctive airiness, loft, and longevity compared to the pressed or loosely filled wool you'll find in standard wool bedding.
Durability that lasts decades. Our own family's Texeler duvets are over 25 years old and still perform beautifully — a lifespan not achievable with down or synthetic bedding.
Texeler is a Dutch bedding brand founded in 1984 on the island of Texel, and every Texeler product is still manufactured there today. The company's history started when founder Dick Graaf bought the traditional wool-processing method from an elderly islander who hand-made wool blankets for rheumatism and diabetes patients. He refined the process, moved the business to Oudeschild, and in 2007 built the modern factory that still produces every Texeler duvet, pillow, topper, underblanket, and futon on the island.
Yes. All Texeler products are filled with 100% wool from Texeler sheep. It's not a blend, it's not supplemented with wool from other sources, and it's not "Texelerl-breed" wool sourced from farms abroad. The wool goes from the island's pastures directly to the Texel Wool Factory, where it's processed into the filling for every Texeler duvet, pillow, topper, and underblanket.
This is one of the reasons Texeler products carry Waddengoud (Wadden Gold) certification — a regional designation that guarantees authentic island provenance.
WOOL BENEFITS & SLEEP SCIENCE
No. The "itchy wool" association comes from coarse wool sweaters, not premium bedding-grade wool.
WarmWool products use fine-fiber Texeler sheep wool that's been carefully sorted, carded, and de-dusted. The wool never touches your skin directly — it's encased in soft cotton, satin, or tencel covers. What you feel is the luxurious cover fabric, not the wool itself.
Additionally, our de-dusting process removes microscopic particles that can cause irritation, making our bedding safe even for people with sensitive skin.
No — this is one of the biggest misconceptions about wool.
Wool doesn't trap heat like synthetic materials or down. Instead, it actively regulates temperature by absorbing and releasing moisture. When you're warm, wool wicks away perspiration and allows heat to escape. When you're cool, it provides insulation by trapping warm air in its natural crimp.
This is why our 4-season duvets work year-round. The same duvet that keeps you warm in January keeps you comfortable (not overheated) in July.
Hot sleepers often find wool bedding transformative because it prevents the overheating-then-shivering cycle common with synthetic duvets. You stay at a consistent, comfortable temperature throughout the night rather than waking up sweating or freezing.
If you're specifically a hot sleeper, we recommend the Ultimate Best Duvet or Tencel Duvet — both designed for maximum breathability and lightweight comfort.
Yes. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic for several reasons:
1. Dust Mite Resistant:
Wool regulates moisture and temperature in ways that create an inhospitable environment for dust mites. These microscopic pests thrive in warm, humid conditions — exactly what wool prevents.
2. De-Dusted Processing:
We're the only Dutch sleep brand that de-dusts our wool, removing microscopic particles that can trigger allergies. This makes our bedding safe even for people with dust allergies.
3. Breathable & Moisture-Wicking:
Wool prevents the damp conditions where mold, mildew, and bacteria grow. It stays fresh and clean naturally.
4. Chemical-Free:
Our products contain no synthetic chemicals, flame retardants, or harsh treatments that can cause reactions.
However, note: If you have a true wool allergy (rare, affecting less than 1% of people), our products aren't suitable. But if you're allergic to dust mites, down, or synthetic materials, wool is often the perfect alternative.
Yes, there's a mild, natural wool scent when you first unpack your bedding — and honestly, that's part of the charm.
Fresh Texeler wool has a subtle, earthy smell from lanolin (the natural oil in wool). It's not unpleasant or overpowering, just natural. Some customers describe it as a "clean countryside" scent — you immediately know this came from real grazing sheep, not synthetic fibers from a factory.
This natural scent is actually something many people appreciate. It's tangible proof you're getting genuine real wool, not mass-produced alternatives. There's something reassuring about bedding that smells like it came from nature, not a chemical plant.
As you use your bedding, the scent becomes less noticeable — your nose adjusts, and the wool settles into your home environment. If you want to speed this along, airing it outdoors helps, but most people find the scent pleasant or barely notice it after the first few nights.
The long-term advantage:
Once your bedding is in regular use, wool's natural lanolin actually prevents odors from developing. Unlike cotton or synthetic materials that absorb sweat and smells, wool stays remarkably fresh without frequent washing. The same properties that give it that initial natural scent also keep it clean and odor-free over decades of use.
So yes, it smells like real wool — because it is real wool. And for most customers, that's exactly what they're looking for.
Yes — wool is one of the best bedding materials for anyone experiencing night sweats, hot flashes, or menopause-related temperature swings.
The reason is moisture regulation. Most night-sweat discomfort isn't just about temperature — it's about waking up damp, then cold once the sweat cools. Wool handles both halves of that cycle. It can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet, wicking sweat away from your body and releasing it into the air before it has a chance to chill you.
Synthetic duvets trap moisture against your skin, which is why menopausal sleepers often report waking up drenched. Down clumps when wet and loses its insulating properties. Wool does neither — it stays dry to the touch and keeps regulating temperature in both directions, warming when you cool down and breathing when you heat up.
For night sweats specifically, we'd recommend a Tencel-Wool Duvet or the 'Ultimate Best' Tencel-Wool Duvet. The Tencel cover adds an extra layer of moisture-wicking and is specifically designed for people who perspire at night — Tencel absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton.
For children, yes — wool bedding is an excellent choice. Its temperature regulation, natural dust-mite resistance, and chemical-free construction make it particularly well-suited to kids, and the Washable Wool Duvet is specifically designed with children in mind: it can be machine-washed at 40°C without losing its structure, so spills and accidents aren't a problem.
For babies, we follow standard safety guidance, which we cannot override. Pediatric safety organizations recommend that babies under 12 months sleep without duvets, pillows, or loose bedding of any kind due to SIDS and suffocation risks. This applies to all bedding materials, not just wool. From 12 months onwards, light bedding is generally considered safer.
If you're shopping for a baby or toddler, please consult your pediatrician for guidance on when and what to introduce. For older children, our full range is suitable — the Washable Wool Duvet is usually the most practical starting point.
Much longer — this is one of the biggest value propositions of wool bedding.
Typical lifespans:
- Synthetic duvets: 3–5 years, sometimes up to 10 for premium versions. Synthetic fibers break down, flatten, and lose their insulating properties relatively quickly.
- Down duvets: 10–15 years. Down lasts longer than synthetic but gradually loses loft and can clump if it gets damp.
- Wool duvets (like Texeler): 15–25+ years of real performance. Our own family's Texeler duvets are over 25 years old and still perform beautifully.
The reason wool lasts so long comes down to the fiber itself. Wool fibers are extraordinarily elastic — they can stretch and return to their original shape thousands of times without breaking. Texeler's proprietary needling process reinforces this by interweaving fibers vertically through the fleece layers, which prevents the "flattening" that eventually ruins cheaper wool duvets.
Wool also resists the two things that kill most bedding: moisture damage (wool is self-cleaning thanks to natural lanolin) and fiber breakdown (wool doesn't pulverize or become dusty over time, which is why Texeler products never need to be refilled).
On a cost-per-year basis, a wool duvet from Texeler typically works out cheaper than buying three or four synthetic replacements over the same period — and you sleep better the whole time.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
Each cover material offers a different feel and different benefits. All three are high-quality, certified fabrics — the choice comes down to personal preference and how you sleep.
Percale Cotton. Crisp, cool, and breathable — like luxury hotel sheets. It has a matte finish and gets softer with every wash. Best for hot sleepers, those who prefer a "fresh sheet" feeling, and anyone who finds satin too slippery.
Satin. Silky-smooth with a subtle sheen and luxurious drape. It feels more indulgent against the skin and has a warmer, cozier hand-feel than percale. Best for those who love tactile luxury, cold sleepers, and anyone seeking a five-star hotel experience.
Tencel. Made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus fibers. Smoother than cotton, exceptionally gentle on sensitive skin, and highly moisture-wicking — Tencel absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton. Best for eco-conscious buyers, people with skin sensitivities, and anyone who runs hot or perspires at night.
So: crisp (Percale), silky (Satin), or sustainable-smooth (Tencel) — all three pair beautifully with Texel wool filling.
Tencel is a natural fiber made from sustainably harvested eucalyptus wood. It's not a synthetic — it's a plant-based material with properties that happen to outperform many synthetic fabrics in comfort and moisture management.
How it's made. Eucalyptus trees are harvested from FSC-certified forests, which guarantee responsible forest management. The wood is processed into fiber using a closed-loop system that recycles nearly all the water and solvents used in production. No chlorine bleach is used. The result is a soft, silky fiber that's sustainable from forest to finished product.
Why it works so well for bedding. Tencel absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton, which means it pulls sweat away from your skin more effectively. Its smooth fiber surface also makes it inhospitable to dust mites, bacteria, and mildew — making it a strong choice for people with allergies or sensitive skin. And despite its silk-like softness, Tencel is remarkably durable and easy to care for.
Where you'll find it in our range. Tencel covers are used on our Tencel-Wool Duvet, the 'Ultimate Best' Tencel-Wool Duvet, and the 'Ultimate Best' Tencel-Wool Pillow. The Supple Tencel-Wool Pillow range also feature Tencel covers.
No. All Texeler bedding is filled with 100% pure Texeler sheep wool — no polyester, no synthetic fibers, no blended fillers, and no chemical flame retardants. The wool is traceable from Texel farms all the way through to the finished product.
What about the covers? Covers are made from natural materials only — percale cotton, satin cotton, Tencel (eucalyptus fiber), or certified organic cotton. No synthetics there either.
One thing worth knowing about the Supple Tencel-Wool Pillow range: these pillows contain a 100% natural latex core for structural support. Natural latex is a plant-derived material tapped from rubber trees — it's not synthetic. However, a small number of people have latex allergies. If that applies to you, we'd recommend one of our wool-filled pillows instead (like the 'Ultimate Best' Tencel-Wool Pillow or Nature Satin-Wool Pillow), which contain only wool and natural fabric.
Lanolin is the natural oil produced by sheep to protect their wool from rain, wind, and cold. It's what makes a sheep's fleece water-repellent and flexible — and it's one of the main reasons Texel wool performs so well as bedding.
Why Texeler sheep produce more of it. The combination of salty sea air, constant wind, and year-round outdoor grazing causes Texeler sheep to produce an exceptionally high level of lanolin compared to sheep raised in sheltered inland conditions.
What it does for your bedding. Lanolin stays in the wool fibers even after washing and processing, and it gives Texeler bedding several properties that matter during sleep:
- Self-cleaning. Lanolin is naturally antibacterial and dirt-repellent, which is why wool bedding stays fresh without frequent washing.
- Odor resistance. The same properties that keep the wool bacteria-free also prevent the build-up of sweat and body odors over time.
- Flexibility and resilience. Lanolin keeps the wool fibers supple, which is part of why Texeler duvets don't go brittle or break down over decades of use.
- Soothing for muscles and joints. Lanolin has a long-standing reputation for a soothing effect on muscles and joints, and has historically been used in creams and ointments for this reason. Some customers with rheumatic complaints or joint pain specifically choose wool bedding for this property.
You might sometimes notice a subtle, natural "wool scent" when your Texeler bedding is new — that's lanolin. It fades within a few days of regular use, but the beneficial properties remain in the fibers for the lifetime of the product.
Vertical needling is Texeler's proprietary manufacturing process — and according to Texeler themselves, it's "the secret" of why their bedding performs so differently from standard wool duvets.
What it does. In a normal wool duvet, the fibers lie flat in horizontal layers. Over time, those layers compress, separate, and bunch up — and the duvet loses its loft and insulating power. Texeler's needling machine works on the stacked fleece layers with rows of fine, barbed needles that punch down through them. The needles don't add anything — they re-orient some of the existing wool fibers from horizontal to vertical as they pass through. Those re-oriented fibers effectively lock the horizontal layers together, preventing separation and flattening over time.
Why it matters. The result is a filling that's simultaneously more voluminous, lighter, and more resilient than conventional wool bedding. Air moves through the fibers more freely (better ventilation, better moisture management) while the interlocked fiber structure prevents the duvet from collapsing, bunching, or going flat. It's one of the main reasons Texeler duvets can last longer than other bedding alternatives.
Why it's unique. This process is only used at the Texeler factory in Oudeschild, on the Island of Texel. It was developed and refined in-house over decades and isn't applied by any other wool bedding manufacturer we know of.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
Barely any maintenance needed — that's the point. Wool is naturally self-cleaning thanks to its lanolin, so it doesn't build up odors, bacteria, or dust like cotton or synthetic bedding does.
Just use a duvet cover as you normally would, and air your bedding outside once or twice a year on a dry day. That's it. No special routine, no frequent washing, no fuss.
Only the Washable Wool Duvet is machine-washable — at 40°C.
All other Texeler products (duvets, pillows, toppers, underblankets, futon) should not be machine-washed. Machine-washing felts the wool fibers permanently, and doing so will void the 5-year warranty.
If you want a fully washable option — great for kids' beds or guest rooms — the Washable Wool Duvet is the one to pick.
CERTIFICATIONS
Texeler carries six independent certifications covering quality, safety, sustainability, and authentic island origin:
- Woolmark — guarantees the wool meets strict international quality and purity standards.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 — verifies the textiles are free from harmful substances and safe for direct skin contact.
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) — certifies the eucalyptus wood used for our Tencel covers comes from responsibly managed forests.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — guarantees the organic cotton used in certified products is genuinely organic, from farm to finished product.
- Waddengoud (Wadden Gold) — a regional certification guaranteeing sustainable production, animal welfare, and authentic Wadden-region origin.
- Echt Texels Produkt (Real Texel Product) — verifies the product is genuinely made on Texel with local materials.
Together, these certifications cover everything from the wool itself to the cover fabrics, the production process, and the island origin of our bedding.
You can read about each certification in detail on our certifications page, where we explain what each one covers and why it matters.
Every certification we claim is independently verifiable. The issuing organizations publish their certification criteria openly, and most maintain public registries where you can look up certified brands and products.
If you want to verify any specific certification, the best starting point is the issuing body's website — they'll have the full details of what's been certified and how.
SUSTAINABILITY
Animal welfare is taken seriously on Texel. Sheep farming on the island is small-scale — around 100 farmers share the care of roughly 14,000 sheep and 24,000 lambs each spring. These aren't industrial-scale operations; they're family farms that have worked the island's pastures for generations.
What day-to-day life looks like for the sheep:
- They live outdoors year-round, in open pastures with sun, sea wind, and a natural mix of grasses and herbs.
- Shearing happens once a year, mostly between mid-May and mid-July. Modern sheep don't shed their fleece naturally — they need to be sheared for their own health and comfort, especially before the warm summer months.
- The shearing process is done by experienced local shearers who work carefully and unhurriedly — reducing stress on the animals and leaving no harm done.
No mulesing. The wool industry isn't always kind to the animals it depends on — mulesing, a painful procedure where skin is removed from around a sheep's tail, is still used in parts of the global wool industry, and not every wool bedding brand can guarantee their wool is free of it. This has never been the case on Texel. All our wool comes from sheep that graze freely on the island, cared for by farmers who know them individually, and mulesing is not practiced here.
Independent verification. Texeler carries the Waddengoud certification, which specifically verifies animal welfare, guaranteed outdoor pasture access, and farmers working with respect for the animals, landscape, and environment. This isn't a self-assessed claim — it's an independent standard with ongoing audits.
Yes, on balance — though it's worth being specific about why, because every material has trade-offs.
Where wool wins:
- Renewable. Sheep grow a new fleece every year, whether we use it or not. It's a continuously replenishing resource — unlike synthetic fibers, which come from finite petroleum, or down, which requires raising and slaughtering waterfowl.
- Biodegradable. At the end of its (very long) life, wool breaks down naturally in soil without leaving microplastics behind. Synthetic bedding sheds microplastics throughout its entire use and never fully biodegrades.
- Long lifespan. A Texeler duvet lasts decades. Synthetic duvets typically last 3–5 years. That means one wool duvet replaces five or more synthetic ones — a massive reduction in total material, production, and waste.
- Low-maintenance. Wool needs far less washing than other bedding, which means less water, detergent, and energy used over its lifetime.
- No harmful chemicals. No flame retardants, no synthetic finishes, no petroleum-based treatments.
The honest trade-offs:
- Sheep produce methane. Livestock farming has a real climate footprint — we're not going to pretend it doesn't. But the long lifespan of wool bedding offsets this considerably compared to replacing synthetics every few years.
- Land use. Sheep need pasture. On Texel, this pasture is part of the island's traditional landscape and supports local biodiversity — but it's still land use to be honest about.
Compared to down: wool is more durable, doesn't require raising waterfowl, and avoids the animal welfare concerns associated with down production (which can range from excellent to genuinely problematic depending on the supplier).
Compared to synthetic: wool wins clearly on nearly every environmental metric — biodegradability, lifespan, no microplastic shedding, no petroleum inputs.
So yes, wool is more sustainable — not because it's perfect, but because it's better on the things that matter most.

Please note: once a duvet, pillow, topper, or underblanket has been unpackaged or slept on, it can no longer be returned for hygiene reasons.
Not currently. Larger international brands sometimes offer 30 or 60-night sleep trials, but as a small independent retailer focused exclusively on Texeler, that isn't something we can sustainably offer yet.
What we do instead is invest in genuine pre-purchase advice. If you're unsure which duvet warmth, pillow height, or cover material is right for you, contact us before ordering — we know the full Texeler range in detail and we'd rather help you choose the right product the first time than sell you something that doesn't suit you.
No. Custom-sized orders (king sizes, non-standard dimensions, or any product made to your specifications) are made to order specifically for you and cannot be returned unless they arrive defective.
This is standard under EU consumer law — personalized or custom-made products are exempt from the 14-day right of withdrawal. We'll always remind you of this before confirming any custom order, so you have a chance to double-check your measurements and preferences before production starts.
If your order arrives damaged, please contact us within 7 days of delivery with photos so we can assess the issue and agree on the right solution with you.
WARRANTY
Every Texeler product comes with a standard 5-year warranty covering the entire product — from the wool filling to the cover fabric, stitching, zippers, and snap buttons. If something fails due to a manufacturing defect during normal use within the warranty period, it's covered.
5 years from the date of purchase, on every Texeler product we sell — duvets, pillows, toppers, underblankets, and the futon. This applies to the entire product, not just the filling.
Please keep your order confirmation as proof of purchase — you'll need it to make a warranty claim.
The warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage caused by how the product is used or treated. The following are not covered:
- Accidents and spills — stains, rips, pet damage, burns, and other accidental damage
- Improper use — damage from using the product in ways it wasn't designed for
- Incorrect cleaning — damage caused by machine-washing products that aren't machine-washable, using harsh detergents, tumble drying, or dry-cleaning without informing the cleaner it's pure new wool
- Normal wear and tear — gradual aging that happens with any bedding over time
- Unauthorized repairs or modifications — if the product has been altered or repaired by someone other than Texeler
If you're unsure whether something qualifies, contact us with photos and we'll help you figure out next steps.
No. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, not gradual aging.
That said, "natural wear and tear" looks very different with wool bedding than with down or synthetics. Texeler products are built to last decades, not years — so if your duvet is developing issues within the warranty period, it's much more likely to be a defect we'd cover than wear and tear. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll take a look.
